I&D Now: Best Practices for Evaluating Performance, November 19, 2020

From Daniel Preto

Dear colleagues,

This month we kicked off Phase 1 of our Common Review Process across all UnitedHealthcare Global. As you already know, this is an opportunity to reflect on employee accomplishments and reward employee performance, sharing meaningful feedback and directly engaging on their development.

As a leader who participated in the first UnitedHealthcare Global Unconscious Bias workshop, this moment is also an awesome opportunity to reflect and use our values lenses of Integrity and Compassion alongside Inclusion & Diversity best practices.

In collaboration with the enterprise, the attached guide* has been developed to help leaders like us learn about and understand how to mitigate unconscious bias during the performance appraisal process, from selecting the performance rating to participating in calibration sessions.

This is a very practical tool and I think it can be very insightful for all stages of the Common Review Cycle.

Here are some of the tips to mitigate unconscious bias during this process, as described in more details on the attachment:

1. Do not just rely on your memory

2. Gather different perspectives

3. Walk in their shoes

4. Hold yourself accountable

5. Check your mood

6. Read through your Manager Evaluation before submitting

I invite you to take some time to read the attached guide (English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese or European Portuguese) and use some of these tips as you engage in your performance assessments for this cycle.

Inclusion & Diversity is a journey, and I am glad to be part of it with you each step of the way.

Thank you.

Daniel Preto
